Picture of garbage in, garbage out online event

On Wednesday 9th September, BESA held its first online event via Zoom; led by our Executive Committee Member, Cathal O’Siochru. Using his extensive professional academic experience in research methods, the session provided a beginner’s guide to quantitative analysis in research.

A video of edited highlights from the session

The video above provides edited highlights from the fully booked session, where participants were guided through:

  • How to critically consider whether quantitative analysis is needed within research contexts;
  • Issues of reliability and validity, and the importance of identifying a theoretical base for analysis;
  • Sampling types, sample size and considering relevant variables;
  • An unravelling of the most common types of quantitative testing (t-test, correlations, & Chi Square), and a live demonstration of conducting tests using excel.

We will be announcing further BESA online events in the near future, so please watch out for further messages regarding these. If you missed this particular session and would be interested in participating in a repeat, Cathal would be happy to run the session again should numbers warrant it.
