Students’ business activities and academic performance: Evidence from secondary schools in Surulere Local Government Area, Oyo State, Nigeria

The study examines the relationship between students’ involvement in business activities and their academic performance in secondary schools in the Surulere Local Government Area, Oyo State, Nigeria. The study specifically determines the extent to which secondary school students in Surulere LGA are involved in business activities, identifies the types of business activities commonly undertaken by secondary school students, assesses the relationship between the level of students’ involvement in business activities and their academic performance, and examines the influence of socio-demographic factors (gender, age, and class level) on students’ business involvement.  This research adopts a descriptive survey (method) for the study in which questionnaires were administered to the respondents in secondary schools within the Surulere Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria. The respondents for the study are both SS1-3 students and their teachers. Descriptive and inferential statistics were utilised to analyse the collected data. The findings affirm that a substantial proportion of students are actively engaged in business activities, often out of necessity, and that this involvement plays a significant role in shaping their daily academic lives.
